Frequently Asked Questions

UPDATED: August 27, 1999

Q1. What version of R2 signaling schemes does Lucent support?
A1. R2gen (generic) and MF R2 (Multi-Frequency R2).

Q2. Does Lucent support MF R1, DTMF (Dial Tone MultiFrequency) or pulse dialing schemes?
A2. MF R1, DTMF and pulse dialing are not supported.

Q3. What is the R2gen option?
A3. R2gen (generic) is the most common protocol used on E1 circuits. This protocol is symmetrical. The exchange side and the subscriber side are the same. Normally one end of the link is predetermined as the originator of calls, while the other end is the terminator of the call.

Q4. What is the MF R2 option?
A4. (MF R2), Multi-Frequency is used as an interregister scheme and is normally used to transfer address information between telephone exchanges. MF R2 is a compelled system. A pair of tones representing a digit is transmitted by one side, and the other side must acknowledge that it has received that digit before the originating side will transmit another digit.

Q5. How do I obtain more detailed information about R2gen (generic) and MF R2?
A5. Refer to ITU specification Q.422 for R2gen (generic), Q.441 and Q.442 ITU specifications for MF R2.

Q6. Are there any special configuration options to choose from when enabling MF R2 signaling on a Lucent PM3?
A6. Yes, Lucent has supplied 5 MF R2 profiles specific to different countries and switch configurations. Refer to the Release note for more detailed setup information.

Q7. How do I tell which MF R2 profile is in use?
A7. Show line0|1 will display the MF R2 profile option.
Sample line configuration and profile option.

Command> sh line0
------------  line0 - E1 Inband DS0  ------------

Status:UP  F3   Framing:FAS  Encoding:HDB3  PCM:a-law

Signaling:MFR2  Profile:0

          Bipolar                     0
          CRC4                        0
          E-bit                       0
          FAS bit                     0

Q8. What is the default R2 configuration profile?
A8. R2gen is the default line configuration profile. Switch Tone exchange is not supported nor needed with this configuration.

Q9. What E1 Framing and Encoding mechanisms are supported by the PM3?
A9. PM3 supports CRC4 or FAS framing and HDB3 or AMI encoding.

Q10. Does the PM3 when configured for MF R2 support both client dialin and dialout capabilities?
A10. Client dialin only, dialout is not supported.

Q11. Is Caller-ID supported over an R2 configured line?
A11. Yes, Caller-ID is supported.
