5 BRI Frequently Asked Questions and Request For Enhancement

Frequently Asked Questions Index

Question List

Are there cause codes for improved debugging?
A: With ComOS version 3.3.1, use the command "set debug isdn on"

Back to index

Can the last cause code be added to the port status?

It is suggested that you add the last cause code to the IDLE port status. For example, a call attempt from a port which tried to dial a location that received a "busy" signal would be "IDLE -017". On the other hand, a dial attempt that failed because there were no circuits/channels available would be "IDLE-034". This also provides an ability to note that things are working properly with "IDLE-016" demonstrating that normal call clearing occurred. In fact, one could argue that these codes with port number should be logged with all the other syslog activities with dial out on the PortMaster.
A: ComOS version 3.3.1 has this feature. Use the command "show <port number>".

Back to index

What does "set debug isdn on" display?
A: Displays all the ISDN interaction with a BRI and the Telco

Back to index

How do I know if my BRI is properly connected to the Telco?
A: If the LED is solid green for the BRI, then you have a good physical connection. For Example: Check the port with command "show s10" and you should see the following 2:

Modem Status: DCD- CTS+ TELCO+ NT1+
The port status should be IDLE. This means that the built in NT1 circuitry is good and that a proper connection to the Telco exists. Note: when the directory number is set, it will activate the signaling on the d-channel.

It is unclear to me if I have to duplicate an ISDN configuration for a single BRI on two ports. If I plug in an ISDN on the first BRI port, do I have to duplicate the configuration on the second port?
A: . BRI separates into 2 ports on the PortMaster. Each port has to be configured individually, normally with a SPID and  a directory number. [Directory numbers are required]

What are the switch types that we support and how are they set up?
A: At this time we support National ISDN 1 (NI-1), AT&T 5ESS Custom 1 & Point to Point, and DMS-100.

Setting your switch type and what it means:

1) DMS100 setting only with DMS switch using DMS 100 provisioning.
For Example:
Command> set isdn-sw dms
ISDN switch type set to DMS-100

2 ) 5ESS setting only with 5ESS Custom Multipoint provisioning.
For Example:
Command> set isdn-sw 5ess
ISDN switch type set to ATT-5ESS

3) NI-1 in all other cases.
For Example:
Command> set isdn-sw ni-1
ISDN switch type set to NI-1

4) 5ESS setting only with 5ESS Point-to-Point provisioning.
For Example:
Command> set isdn-sw 5ess-ptp
ISDN switch type set to 5ESS-PTP
Note: If you reset the switch, then the PortMaster must be rebooted.

Is there an X-GUI (PMconsole) version available for ISDN ?
A: Yes.

For ISDN:
Edit | Global allows switch type selection
View | Ports presents an ISDN status option. This option locks out all other view displays. Also, when viewing Active configuration, ISDN ports do not display speed, flow control, etc. Edit ISDN Port allows SPID and Directory Number selection
General: (features are dependent on ComOS version. ComOS 3.3.1 supports all features listed below)
Edit | Port shows Modem Name READ ONLY.
Status line displays PortMaster up time.
Edit | Ethernet[0|1] shows MAC Address READ ONLY.
Edit | RADIUS allows specification of primary and secondary accounting server.

How do I program my ISDN ports for dial-in service?
A: Program them as you would any other serial port, adding a SPID and directory number provided by your telephone service provider.

Back to index

What is the correct entry for a SPID and directory number?
A: The SPID is a unique number that identifies an individual b-channel. It is assigned by the Telco when you order an ISDN line. The directory number should have the area code and the phone number (omit dashes separating area code, prefix and line number).

Back to index

What is the reason  I should consider using 5ESS Multi-point over PTP?
A: It is more economical.

In many areas it is significantly less expensive and allows better control of hunt groups.
The rule of thumb is get NI-1 if it available unless you know the reason (tariff/capability) you want Custom service. It is, however, likely that you will get Custom service with Centrex type service from most RBOC's.
Back to index

What are the SPID formats by Telco switch type?
A: Here's a partial answer.

AT&T 5ESS
Point-to-Point: no SPID needed
Multipoint custom: 01+<7 digit local number>+0 (one for each B channel)
NI-1: 01+<7 digit local number>+TID
(TID is a 2-digit number from 00 to 62, usually 00)

Nortel DMS-100
default: <3 digit area code>+<7 digit local number>+<suffix>
(the suffix is usually '1' for B1 and '2' for B2)
NI-1: same as default but <suffix> is the two-digit TID (see 5ESS TID)

Siemens EWSD:
Whatever the telco tells you to put in.
Note: We do not support the EWSD switch type unless it's set for NI-1
Back to index

What is the function of a directory number?
A: The directory number is required for INCOMING calls only. We use this to match the b- channel with the port. A SPID is associated with the b- channel and the directory number is associated with the port. The two come together when an  call originates on a specified b- channel enabling the PortMaster to associate the call with the correct port.

Back to index

Do you support an "S/T" interface?
A: We have products for both the U and S/T interfaces.

Back to index

Does Simple Network Management (SNMP) work with your product?
A: That feature can be enabled/disabled as follows:

Command> set snmp on
Enabling SNMP agent
Command> set snmp read public
SNMP read community changed to: public
Command> add snmp reader any
New SNMP reader ANY successfully added

hostname% snmpstatus lab-pm2e

What are the various BRI LED flashing states and what do they mean?
A: See the Comm Server H/W Installation Guide for more information.

Back to index

Can the debug output be activated within the GUI (PMconsole)?
A: Not at this time. We are considering this RFE

Back to index

Is the SPID required for 5ESS (Point to Point )P-T-P service?
A: No.

Back to index

Does the 5BRI time out if we do not get a TERMINATE REQUEST ACK in a reasonable amount of time and does it clear the port correctly?
A: Yes and yes.

Back to index

Will the new ISDN products support load balancing?
A: Yes and they will also do Multilink PPP.

Back to index

Can dial on demand be used 3 ISDN?
A: Yes.

Back to index

Can Telepath be used and if so, does it support data compression before the information is sent to the modem?
A: No, since Telepath is a DOS based product.

Back to index

Can you convert from sync connections to async connections on the ISDN BRI?
A: We automatically sense the in bound connection and run sync or async as required.

Back to index

Does the PortMaster support RFC 1597, which basically takes illegal IP addresses and transfers them into legal ones?
A: No.

Back to index

Can I swap the SPIDs between the bearer channels on a BRI?
A: Yes. They are interchangeable.

Back to index

What is the reason  my B channel rings busy when I place a voice call to it?
A: The circuit has been provisioned for data only; however, a data call should work fine.

Back to index

The Telco gave me a single number for my 5ESS Point-To-Point BRI. What is this number for?
A: Since SPIDs are not required, this number should refer to your directory number and should be applied to both channels of the BRI.

Back to index

Are there any lower level ISDN debug commands available?
A: Yes, and they are as follows:
Command> set debug isdn_d on (off)

Command> set debug isdn_m on (off)
Back to index

Do you do AMI signaling?
A: No. We use 2B1Q.

Back to index

What is the function of Terminal Endpoint Identifier (TEI)?
A: TEI is the Terminal Endpoint Identifier. Since a switch can communicate with many devices on a BRI, each device needs a separate TEI so the switch can distinguish the individual connection.

Back to index

What determines the connection rate?
A: The PortMaster will automatically sense the connect speed from the switch and adjust between 64000 and 56000 accordingly. Apparently the switch will arrange a 64K connection if the call is placed with the area code and a 56K connection if no area code is specified.

Back to index

Can you force a certain connection rate for an outgoing call?
A: Yes. For example to force a 56K connection use:

Command> set s10 speed 56000

or, to force a 56K dial out:

Command> AT&N56DT5551212

What is the reason my ATT-5ESS Multipoint hunt group not working properly?

I am able to dial in to the first number of the hunt group, but if I place a second call to the hunt group number I get:
S12: Sending Refuse Call - No Ports
S12: Sending Refuse Call - No Ports
S12: Received Disconnect Internetworking Unspec
S12: Received Call Clear

On the dialing end I get:
atdt919166766384
Dialing...
Call Terminated - No Circuit Available (34)
NO CARRIER
However, I seem to be able to dial in directly to the port just fine.

A: Change the max number of circuits per SPID from 2 to 1. The default configuration on Pac Bell 5ESS Multipoint is to assign one voice and two data channels per "device" (meaning per SPID). Multipoint gives two SPIDs. In a hunt group, what happens is that the first call comes in and grabs a channel using the first SPID, then the second call comes in and grabs the second data channel off the first SPID. Then, the third call comes in, and tries to grab a channel off the second SPID and doesn't find one. Pac Bell figured out is that they need to configure a 1 Voice 1 Data configuration.

I have installed my ISDN board as a second MOD board in my PM2E but I am not able to see any of the ports?
A: The first MOD board should have the jumper across pins 1 & 2 and the second MOD board should have the jumper set across pins 2 & 3. Also be sure that you have upgraded to ComOS 3.3.1 or higher and rebooted.

Back to index

Under what conditions is the PortMaster supposed to return "Calling-Station-Id" information?
A: If the circuit is set up with caller ID. When the call is made, the RADIUS packet will be filled in as you would expect.

Back to index

Can Multilink PPP work across b-channels on a PortMaster?
A: Absolutely. You can run Multilink PPP with any b- channels in a single chassis.

Back to index

I just installed my 5BRI board but I get "NO-SERVICE" when I show the port as follows:
S10: Clearing Register Request
S10: Register Failed - Telco Not Responding
S10: Received Disconnect Ack Temporary Failure

Here is the configuration:

Command> sh s10

Dial Group: 0

ISDN Switch Type: ATT-5ESS
A: The user actually had a switch type of AT&T 5ESS Point to Point and did not have the directory number set. They had set the SPID instead. To correct this, perform the following commands:

Command> set isdn-switch 5ESS-PTP
Command> set s10 spid
Command> set s10 dn 1235551212
With Point to Point (PTP), the directory number is the SAME for both channels on a BRI.  Therefore, port S11 must also be set the same as port S10. Note, the directory number has the "area code" and the local number without the prefix 01 or the suffix 0. This was useable in Pacifc Bell territory and may not be useable in other areas. Also, no SPID is required for either channel.

Can I use "any" PMinstall to install ComOS for use with ISDN hardware?
A: No. You will need PMinstall 3.3.1 or higher.

Back to index

Will my old ComOS recognize the ISDN ports?
A: No. You must have ComOS 3.3.1 or later installed and your PortMaster has to be rebooted afterwards.

Back to index

Do I need to actually order a separate number for each 64k in order for two users dialing in to a single BRI?
A: No. Each BRI has 2 B-channels which are considered to be 2 separate lines thus, you can have up to two 64K calls simultaneously on a single BRI.

Back to index

Does Lucent ISDN equipment allow data over voice calls (i.e.. DOSBR)?
A: Yes. Please be sure that your PortMaster is running ComOS 3.3.1 or later.

Back to index

Are there extensions to the high density cable?
A: No. We provide 1-25' cable but you could specify a 50' cable if required.

Back to index

Will the 5BRI boards do clear channel Point to Point Protocol (PPP), or do I have to use V.120 rate adaptation?
A: Our equipment will auto detect either V.120 or sync-to-sync PPP.

Back to index

Is there anything special required to handle ISDN users?
A: No. However a number of new RADIUS attributes are now available to control availability and improve accounting. Please see the Release Notes for ComOS 3.3.1

Is it possible to get all three slots on the Lucent PortMaster (TM) 2E with BRI and no async?
A: Yes. We make the PortMaster 2ei with a base of 5BRI.

Back to index

What is the reason my NI-1 hunt group is not working properly?
A: Try removing the directory numbers from each port.

Back to index

Does the Lucent PortMaster (TM) support ISDN bridging to connect to an Ascend Pipeline 25?
A: No, we route, we do not bridge.

Back to index

What is the reason I have 2 BRIs installed that say NO-SERVICE?
A: There may be a wiring error. Wiring may be reversed or missing at the customer premises or on the telephone company main frame. In the case of reversed wiring, swapping the cables may correct the problem.  Swapping the SPID and directory numbers between them also may work. There may also be missing or incorrect translations at the telephone company switch

What is the reason my Motorola BITSURFR PRO resets with Trumpet 2.1F?
A: Unknown. One user said:

"I noticed that the (BITSURFR) dying as soon as any data started to flow. I should have thought to lower the MTU since that is how we have solved modem problems like that, but I turned OFF VanJacobsen CSLIP compression in Trumpet to fix the problem."
