ComOS 3.8.2c2 Modem Issues

This technical bulletin provides information regarding modem software releases for the ComOS 3.8.2c2 for the PortMaster 3.

ComOS 3.8.2c2 address most modem disconnection and connection problems.

However, after you have upgraded to the new ComOS version, your customers on Win95 and Win98 operating systems who are experiencing failures must limit the upper threshold speed of their modems with Rockwell HCF chipsets to a speed equal to or less than 41.3Kbps.

Instruct your customers to do one of the following to limit HCF aggressive speed retrains as the modems attempt to determine a satisfactory speed for marginal customer facilities.

Enter Commas When Dialing In

When the customer dials the connection number, he or she can place 4 to 5 commas immediately after the telephone number-for example, 5551212,,,,,. The commas will limit the connection speed to eliminate the retrain problem.

Change Their PC Settings

Instruct the customer to follow these steps:

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Modems, Properties, Connection, and Advanced Connection Settings.
  2. Under Extra Settings, type the following, including the commas:
    AT+MS=,,,41333
Try AT+MS=V34 if AT+MS=,,,41333 does not work.
  3. Click OK and test by dialing the desired connection.
Problems related to certain HCF modem models cannot be resolved without firmware upgrades to the client modems. Your customers can use the following links to locate some manufactures current firmware releases. If a customer's modem model is not included in this list, recommend that he or she contact the modem manufacturer for assistance.
