I know there are newer relases, but if I'm not totally wrong, upgrading
other units didn't help.
set modem on means carrier detect required, as far as I can see. I've set it
to on now. Nothing changes.
The problem isn't that the modems loose connection or something (they're
rock solid), the problem is just that, when the user is uploading something
over the serial link, abort errors occur, several ones per second. This
brings performance to near zero.

You may need to set Modem Control on ("set w1 modem on") which will cause
the PortMaster to retrain if connection is lost to csu/dsu.
