First I had an amazing little dance trying to get our local telephone company
to install E1/Pri. After that several days were spent trying to get the damn thing
to answer the phone before I accidentely discovered the obscure workround for
what I later found was an isdn-d channel sychronization bug.
So then I have a working system which cannot be taken down because I can't predict
when it will come up again (yes E111646 for those of you who are going to ask).
The only thing I have heard back on this was a series of emails duckshoving me
from support in the USA to support in Europe to support in Asia/Pacific. Meanwhile
I start losing customers with the usual "hey I've been a customer of yours for
x years but I can't get better than 31200 baud outa you and I tried xyz the
other day and got 49K so close my account". Things can't be too bad says me,
I can get rock solid 52K connections with my LT Winmodem 5.31.
So I wait, in the dark like everyone else, for new modem code. Surely with all
these complaints someone at Livingston is going to notice and we will have
wonderful new code that fixes problems with Rockwell HCF chipsets, overely
optimistic USR Winmodems and Macintosh Global Village modems. My spare time
is spent rushing round to customers places to upgrade their modem to the latest
flash. Then comes that glimmer, "Hey don't panic, help is on the way in May",
so I wait. Then comes that day in May and 3.8.2c2 is announced, so with much
trepidation (remember I can't predict whether or not this thing is going to
synchronise the d channel after a reboot), I do the upgrade and reboot. Lo and
behold it arises sychronises the d channel and is running 3.8.2c2. My cup
runeth over (instant coffee) not only has it possibly fixed my problems with
modems but maybe it has fixed the d channel problem.
OK so a few customers are ringing in to say thanks for fixing your machine (
note the subtle implication that their $50 modem was never at fault), most
people haven't noticed, and now I have a modem (m10) which goes into
an error state after taking a few calls. I now have two tickets which I
will probably never hear anything about, an ulcer flaring up from drinking
too much coffee and smoking too many cigarettes and am left wondering whether
I should power cycle the machine and whether or not the d channel bug was
really fixed.
Like I said I love my PM3 and think Lucent write wonderful code.
