Yes. The R=Router.

With the Sync WAN port, you use a CSU-DSU. With the async serial ports, you
can use any modem capable of leased line connections which is just about any
of them.

You are probably referring to a CSU/DSU. Dont get leases lines mixed up with
Sync lines tho. You can have dedicated leased SYNC or ASYNC lines.
