Originally when Livingston was leading the charge for RADIUS (waves to
Carl Rigney) it was designed with 1645/6... The 1645 port is actually
assigned to datametrics
rfc2138:
This memo documents the RADIUS protocol. There has been some
confusion in the assignment of port numbers for this protocol. The
early deployment of RADIUS was done using the erroneously chosen port
number 1645, which conflicts with the "datametrics" service. The
officially assigned port number for RADIUS is 1812.
Sooo, to keep backward compatibility, since many shops are/were using 1645
for RADIUS the current 'default' is to use 1645 ... heck I don't even know
what the datametrics port is for ;)...
Realize that if you change the PM to authenticate on port 1812, you better
verify that your RADIUS daemon is listening there ;) or else you'll have
fun not having anyone authenticate.
