Happened here too, here are usually the steps I take to correct it.

1. Tell user OE Sucks.
2. Login to Unix machine.
3. rm /var/spool/mail/usermbox; touch /var/spool/mail/usermbox
4. Instruct user to click Start...Find...Files or Folders
5. Search for Inbox.*
6. Delete three matches.
7. Restart customers computer.
