(PM) 3Com Megahertz Global 56K PC Card Modem

I don't know if I got this posted or not before so I'll redo it...

Host: PM3 Com-OS 3.8.2

Client: Linux Laptop with Above Modem (Global 56K)

I'm unable to get anything reliable out of this. I've tried
S34=32 S34=34 &N24 ( and Many other &N's ) and anywhere from none
to 5 or 6 commas.

If I get a 38+K connect, the re-negotiates are horrible.
Usually, I end up in the initial (before 1st connect) re-training
that continues until I hit the timeout.

Short of locking out V.90 V.8 V.whateverelse and settling for 14.4
is there anything else worth trying?

Is anyone familiar with another PC card modem that works well?

We also use external Couriers, and we experience high rates of
re-negotiation also. Is the Lucent code just biased against the
3-Com/USR/Megahertz family? Is this a plot to sell more LT winmodems????

TIA
