Could have been modem "bios" version - we currently have problems with
Aztech's offering with HCF - the software for it is version 2.1.2.123, and
in my experience, anything below 2.1.2.134 or 135 is pretty much crap.
Granted, even at that software version they are crap, but slightly less
crap than at the lower version. ;)

Can't seem to find any upgrade to the latest code on their site either
so now I have to deal with several dozen irate people who bought these
Aztech crap modems unwittingly with their computers.
