(PM) FYI: 3.8b16, v.90, and you.

I didn't think it'd hurt to pass this along...

Got a phone call yesterday from a reseller guy. One of my recent
messages had been forwarded to him, and he informed me of many
interesting developments.

1) Apparently Rockwell finally came out for interoperability testing,
and this is why 3.8b16 is being pushed back a bit - so Lucent can try to
hammer out functionality with Rockwell chipsets.

2) This currently closed beta (which you can apparently ask to be a part
of, if you REALLY wanna... ;) should continue to be in testing for about
the next two weeks, to see if interoperability is working well.

3) 3.8b16 will then be (PROBABLY!) released into open beta after that,
with the SLIP, v.34, and v.90 issues fixed.

4) Barring a deluge of bug reports, this will (PROBABLY!) become the
official 3.8 release, within about the next three to four weeks.

Now, DO NOT take ANY of this as license to bitch at Lucent if these
dates are not met. I've said it many times - I LUUUUUV my portmaster,
and I wouldn't have it any other way!

I was just happy to hear what was being worked on, and why. I was VERY
happy to hear that full release is probably not far off. (As Megazone
guessed for me recently, in a private email... He thought full release
could be by the end of June)

I mean, really, can the whining stop?

Imagine how incredibly happy we'd be if someone like Microsoft was this
diligent about fixing their goddamn bugs, pushing back release dates as
far as necessary?! It'll NEVER happen! Microsoft will SELL you beta
code (alpha-code quality, of course) and then cheerfully turn around and
sell you gold code (beta-code quality, of course) for full retail
price! THEN they wait until all the INEVITABLE problem reports roll in,
and put out a point release to fix the major ones! (Personally, I
RARELY buy the first version of Microsoft ANYTHING. Why not just hang
around for a few weeks or a month, when they release the point update
that they ALWAYS do! Windows 3.0? NO! Windows 3.1! Windows95? NO!
Windows95 OSR2! Etc, etc, etc.)

Imagine how pissed you'd be if Lucent used and abused all the ISP's like
this, calling it "full release" code and sending it out just to find out
what all the bugs are... Fixing them... THEN releasing the version of
code that shoulda been the first full release anyway!

<Pro-Lucent rant mode off>
