Once upon a time jason_port shaped the electrons to say...
>So - is anyone from Lucent reading these messages?

Remember: THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL FORUM.

ie, no one, Lucent or not, is obligated to say ANYTHING here. Or to read
it for that matter. When they get busy, they don't. I expect, with all
the work to do, they're busy at the moment.

>I think the point was made recently that Livingston often took awhile
>since their resources were less and the people fewer than perhaps they'd
>like. And the followup point was now that Lucent is in control,
>shouldn't you guys have resources coming out of your ears? AT LEAST

No way. The industry has a NEGATIVE unemployment rate. That means it doesn't
matter how many openings you have or how much money you through at an issue -
you can't fill positions. EVERY vendor I know of has reams of open reqs for
engineers and staff of all stripes (well, every healthy vendor). Well before
Lucent bought Livingston, Livingston had a slew of reqs open for months -
that they weren't getting candidates for. That hasn't changed, and Lucent,
the parent, has the same issues. That's life in the industry.

On top of that, when you hire someone it generally has a *negative* initial
impact on things. The existing people bleed off time and resources on
bringing the new person up to speed, and then on reorganizing to delegate a
task to them. AND THEN you reach a point when adding more resources is no
good, even bad. Certainly problems are best addressed by one engineer
working in a focused manner, or a small team. And adding more engineers
leads to wasted time on coordination, information distirbution, and
duplication of effort.

Yes, in the long run being part of Lucent gives them more resources to work
with. But it will take a while to put those to use and to bring on my
staff. First they have to *find* qualified people, then they have to bring
them up to speed. And it is a sellers market - heck, I average a few major
offers a week myself and I'm not full-on engineer.
