RE: (PM) Stuck Modems on PM2E

OK, I know some of you might think this is crazy, but here is what I
did to solve this problem. We were using Multitech MT2834ZDX modems,
and every once in awhile one would lock up. I ordered some solid state
relays from Digi-Key. $10/each. I connected the control side (what
would be the coil side on a standard relay) to the DTE line and
ground. I broke the power line to the modem and ran it through the
load side of the relay. This caused the modem to physically turn off
on a drop of the DTE, which occurs on a "reset s?".

The relays that I chose were small enough to fit inside the modem. I
also selected a model that required very little control current so as
to not strain the PM2. It only took about 30-40 minutes to modify each
modem (after the first one, of course). We never had a problem again.

I tried the same trick on a USR Sportster, but it would go into a
continuous reboot cycle. I have never had this problem with the
modified Multitech's.

Just thought I would share this idea. I beats resetting or powering
down a whole rack, and it is a LOT cheaper that the remote control
power strips.

PS I have the part number on these relays if anyone is interested.
Also, as we have made the move to the PM3, I have some extra relays.
Please e-mail me directly if anyone needs further info.
