(PM) configuring a new pm2e

hello, this is only my second pm2e, so be gentle w/me :-!

okay, the pm2e was in the storage for a while, and it has (at
best, com os 3.5). I would like it to match the already operational
pm no. 1., which is at com os 3.7.2 happily running its 386
processor.

I'd like to have the box startup in netboot mode, and without
the need for a serial connection to its S0 port, simply bleep
on the network until it gets its own IP address -- and then
proceed to load the GENERIC.PM2 (a.k.a. 3.7.2) image which
I have placed in the /tftpboot of a server.

Can a new PM2E get its own IP address using bootp?

Somewhere in the past (maybe some leftover documents when
I was searching for portmaster info a year ago) I remember reading
that the PM2E seeks to get its own binary image by using its
own Ethernet addresses to form a file name?

Is there any way to avoid having to drag a laptop computer
to plug into the S0 and then say "tftpboot 1.2.3.4" or set
its own ethernet address for a new PM2E.

searches of the archives seem to only cover the recent months,
and not the past issues!!!!!
