I didn't notice an immediate increase primarily because so few people here
had 56k modems when we installed the cards last fall. At this point I
think any increase caused by 56k is lost in the noise of other things
influencing our network traffic.

I would highly recommend that you start off in a switched environment with
the PM3s if possible. They generate a pretty steady network load and two
or three of them on a segment shared with other users will cause a
noticeable degradation.
