Nope. You aren't required to have NetBEUI running for this to work. In
fact, you'll only cause yourself trouble if you implement this using
NetBEUI since it isn't a routable protocol. Note that this is very
commonly done but it is usually done in a TCP/IP environment using WINS
servers on NT to map machine names to addresses.

Go to the Microsoft web site and do some searching in the Windows 95
areas. Try using the keyword LMHOST. They have several Knowledge Base
articles that deal with this. It is really fairly easy to do but the first
time can be confusing. I think it is also covered in the Windows 95
Resource Kit.

Here are some instructions that I sent some people on our campus. Note
that these instructions apply if you are not running a WINS server on
your network. If you are, you can probably do away with most, if not all,
of this. Also, replace the IP address in step 2 with the address of the
server (called server3 in my example). Also, note that the nt_domain
below should be either a Windows NT domain name or a workgroup name. If
you have a large number of servers or workstations that you want to see,
you'll soon grow tired of creating entries for them in the lmhosts files
on every workstation on your network. Then it's time to go to a WINS
server.

1) Create a file in your c:\windows directory called lmhosts (there is a
sample file called lmhosts.sam that you can look at).

2) In this file place the following line:

198.216.2.2 server3 #PRE #DOM:nt_domain

3) At the DOS prompt in Windows 95 do:

nbtstat -R
nbtstat -c

4) Go to network neighborhood (or wherever you like) and map a drive. As
an example, use the UNC \\server3 to map it to the "root" level of server3
where you can see all the shares.
