Once upon a time Brian Elfert shaped the electrons to say...
>Does Radius check the clients file before it accepts accounting packets?
Yes.
>I noticed I had the secret wrong for a PM in my clients file, yet
>accounting packets were being accepted just fine. (Server does only
>accounting.)
It checks to see if the client is in the file, but it doesn't care what
the secret is. It will still log the info if the secret is broken, as long
as the client is listed. The current server will add "Request Authenticator
Unverified" to the logged info. We considered it more important NOT to
dump possible valid accounting info, but add the notice to alert you.
Older versions just logged it.
