(PM) Problems with MP/16 and PM2e

I just purchased second hand a PM2e and 2 USR MP/16 modem boxes. The
ISP I purchased them from had got them from another ISP and they don't
know that much about them. I did not receive the serial cables in the
purchase (the MP/16 uses RJ45 connections). I did get the RJ45 to DB25
connectors for the back of the PM2e.

My situation: I am using a standard ethernet cable from the back of the
MP/16 to the adaptor on the back of the MP/16. When I dial into the
modems, they just scream. I have tried every init string I could find
relating to these modems, from atf1s0=1&w on to much more detailed
ones. The screaming would change, but not go away. They would never
connect. I am able to attach to them from the PM2.

I tried changing switch 10 on the back of the MP/16, (boots up with
NVRAM or ROM), to no avail.

So, I need to know:

1. Can I use regular RJ45 Ethernet cables between the MP/16 and the
connectors on the back of the PM2?

2. How should I configure the MP/16 modems to make them work?

Thanks for your help.
