The /xx designates the number of 1's in the subnet mask.
e.g. /27 is the same as a subnet mask 255.255.255.224
(in hex ff.ff.ff.e0 which has 27 1's in binary).
e.g. /32 is equiv. to 255.255.255.255 (32 binary 1's).
e.g. /24 is a class C, or 255.255.255.0

This notation was introduced with CIDR and VLSM for
classless routing.
