Locally in the users file? I think it is 8 but I haven't bothered with
it for a while.
I don't know what all the fuss is about. How would I handle it? I'd
try it for myself and report the results back here and be done.

Now, if you try to login at the prompt as 'useruseruser' and you get PPP -
then it recognized more than 8 characters, so it is probably 63. If you
get shell, then it truncated to 8.
Of course, there is always looking into the source code. Personally I'd
always use the system files so I don't mess with the user file much at
all.
