Likewise, for at least some Flex modems (Global Village and Zoom, on a Mac,
here), once it is known that Flex connections are not going to happen <as
from where I work>, 3 or four commas speed up the negotiation process and
result in a notch or two higher reported connect speeds. (And, for the
Global Village modem, they help keep the modem from getting hot during
negotiation.)
