I replied to him with some other questions, and I will forward the answers
to the list as I receive them.

Once upon a time Jason Lixfeld shaped the electrons to say...

Before you do anything, you are running the Lucent modem cards with
ComOS 3.7.2 - right?
>V.42BIS compression. Is that STILL the only solution or are the people at

USR has a bug in V.42 - we can't fix their problem. There is an upgrade
for Couriers and Telepath modems but I haven't heard of one for Sportsters.
The upgrade was confirmed to resolve the problems on these modems by users.

Try this:
ftp://ftp.usr.com/pub/usr/dl07/setup.exe
It is an update wizard for USR Sportsters and Couriers which runs in
Windows and detects the USR modem(s) on your system then dials into USR's
bbs and downloads any upgrades that are available.
The latest flash for the Courier is dated 7/31/97 and works flawlessly
with the Livingston PM3.
I also found an update for USR TelePath modems in Gateway 2000 systems
which should fix it (it is dated from this month on Gateway's site):
http://www.gateway2000.com
Click on "Hardware" under "Software Library" on the left
Click on "Desktop/Tower Systems"
Click on "Windows 95"
Click on "Modem upgrades"
Then download 7502149.exe which is ~1mb long at the top of the list.

The GVC may be choking on the V.8bis tone that is part of K56flex. A
solid modem doesn't have an issue with it, but there are a few lower priced
brands and older modems that do. The 'fix' for them is 3 or 4 commas at
the end of the dial string. That makes the modem pause long enough after
connection, before starting negotiation, to wait out the V.8bis tone.
I don't expect this to go away any time soon since it is part of the new
modem system.
