(PM) weird modem headscratcher..

I have a trouble that I just can't figure out a way to diagnose.
Client was successfully working from a Win3.1 machine with an unknown
internal modem into my PM-3. Suddenly it quit working. I had her try
dialing in with Terminal. The modems fail to connect and the client modem
just gets hung in a squeal state. I figured their modem had died. But,
the customer is still able to get into some BBS/on-line service with that
modem no problem..

Any ideas where to go with this?
