If history is an indicator, the ITU standard will also certainly not be
K56FLEX nor will it be X2.

Also note the following extract from Livingston's announcement of their
K56FLEX modems:

In addition to providing the maximum interoperability in today's
environment of competing 56K modem technologies, Livingston is
guaranteeing PortMaster 3 customers a free ITU-T 56K upgrade when
the international standard becomes available
