(PM) Ethernet port problems

This problem may be "first grade" stuff for you folks. We are not
engineers, we are wannabees trying our best - we're stumped.

The problem:
We are getting massive input/output errors from our ethernet port. This is
regardless of traffic over the network. About once every hour all the
machines bog down and NIC cards flash incessantly (including the red light
at the PM2e's Ethernet port) until we reboot the Portmaster, pull-off a
terminator or a take cable off any machine and once we replace it, the
network goes back to normal. All NIC cards seem to be OK and we've double
checked all our settings and IP assignments.

The network:
We have a dedicated 56K connection to an ADTRAN dsu on a PM2e with 20 ports
and 8 modems hanging. There are two sub net masks, one for dial-up modems
and one for the internal network. It's an NT4.0 network with 10 Pentium
boxes using NE-2000 NICs and strung together over BNC coax. It's not rocket
science but it's been working great for a year and a half - now this.

Is the BNC ethernet port going bad on the PM2e? How can we test this? If we
switch to RJ45 cabling will it resolve it?

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
