(PM) Retrains causing ~13 second 'hang'? (fwd)

Once upon a time Ryan Cashin shaped the electrons to say...
>I have a customer playing quake (i know)... says it hangs every once in a
>while. Turns out there is a ~13 sec hang everytime his connect retrains.

Are you running 3.7.2 yet?

>Normal?

Well, it is normal for data to stop during a retrain/

>Any way to turn off retrains?

No. And doing so is a BAD idea. If the modem wants to retrain, something
was wrong.

>Shouldn't trans/receive rate change after retrain?

Not necessarily. Sometimes a transient problem can kick off a retrain and
the modems argue and then agree the current rate is just fine.

>Is 12 retrains in 30 minutes excessive? Is that caused by noise in the line?

That does sound high. Yes it is usually caused by noise on the line.

>This caller retrains every 2-3 minutes but I have another connection on for
>26 hrs with 16 retrains... normal?

That is a lot better, sounds normal to me.
