Do you have security on for the port?

No, thats basically for telnet sessions.

If you want PPP only, Network is fine.

Doesnt matter if its PPP only, leave it at Portmaster

No need to use the modem tables if the modems have the correct strings
saved in NVram.

Is it ALL garbage characters or can you read SOME of it? It sounds like
you have a modem/port speed mismatch. Do this... telnet to the portmaster
as root, attach to EACH port, type at and see if you get OK, then type
AT&W to make the modem save the last known connect speed.
