Yeah, Rockwell/Lucent aren't using 56 K Flex to make money at all. They're
acting completely in the interest of Internet people the world over and
would gladly have given their code for free to other chip manufacturers in
the interest of compatability. USR is completely responsible for the mess,
even though they were first to market with a working 56K solution.

Or there's reality. USR had a product developed months before Rockwell or
Lucent, they had millions of dollars invested into the product (or we
wouldn't have 56K at all today, probably) and they have worked with the ITU
from the outset to develop a reasonable standard. Obviously they want to
make money--that's what they're in business for believe it or not.
