Yes, they have been proved at our location. I see it all the time at our
end and only with the Livingston modems. If our users use telnet, they
don't have the problem. If they use our analog banks (USR Couriers with
PM-2e-30's), they don't have the problem. But if they use the PM-3's
(with new K56 OR old "true digital" modems) the connection becomes jerky
and the incidence of unexplained disconnects increase. And this is not
confined to one or two brands of consumer modem. Either that, or the
Livingston's have some "other" problem in the networking/modem code.
But I have seen at least three other messages on this list complaining of
jerkiness and/or disconnects with ppp that go away with telnet and/or
changes in the ppp configuration. I have also noticed the frequent
retrain problem that someone reported earlier with Zoom modems, on a Hayes
Accura. That would explain some of the jerkiness reports with the
56K modem connections. An as for the terminal server connection taking
less resources than a PPP connection, we are using the telnet connection
to do zmodem transfers (thanks to sz/rz) to make the line utilization
roughly the same as an ftp (if not higher).
