Since dropped characters will cause CRC errors too, check that flow
control is set up correctly. You might try lowering the port speed to
see if the CRC error rate drops.

If the modems are connected in error correcting mode (LAPM or MNP),
then phone line noise shouldn't cause end-to-end CRC errors.
