Lance:
In some situations it's local calling to a place on the fringe of local
calling from a central hub, but not all the way in to the central
location (did I say that right?). Placing a small pool there where it's
local dialing to the main hub can extend you out without having to pay
long distance charges. We've even done this with load balanced modems for
the connection to the central hub in situations where the users who want
access are glad to have any connectivity at all.
We also found that in many cases we can get IDSN Foreign Exchange lines
cheaper than dedicated 56 or 128K circuits. So we've done the office
router/PM2 thing in those situations with real good luck. However, there
have been disasters where we've had trouble keeping the calls up. Overall
though, our success rate with these connections is better than 90% and
the problem ones get replaced with a dedicated circuit.
