Hi Everyone,

After about a week of trying to get this to work, I finally managed to
find out what was going wrong. The problem was actually a bug in early
versions of the firmware on Multitech 28.8 modems. Specifically, there
was a problem with LAPM and/or V.42bis implementation. If you disable
them and replace LAPM with MNP error correction (AT#L1) the problem goes
away.

Neither Multitech or Dell (who sold the modem with one of their boxes)
were aware of the problem. It is *definitely* not a Livingston problem
as it has been reported with the USR TC boxes too.

Thanks to all that replied. Sorry to waste your time.
