I have the same setup (pm2ei actually) with a few BRI in hunt, and a few
dedicated BRI not hunting, telco uses a 5ESS, none have any directory
numbers configured, and it works just fine:

Livingston PortMaster PM-2e ComOS 3.5
System uptime is 95 days 3 hours 52 minutes
