56K Protocol and Error Correction

I've been experimenting with the Zoom K56flex modem and the new
Livingstion cards.

Connections are always between 42K and 50K, but fluctuate every time. I
expected this.

I'm really confused by the the fact that the modem only establishes LAP-M
and V42.bis less than a third of the time. I've tried forcing it with no
improvement.

I am connecting the modem directly into the POTS jack of a Courier
I-Modem.

Any thoughts from the gurus?
