Another thing to try is to slightly delay the output of the login prompt
to the modem. I remember certain USR modems having this exact problem.
It is a firmware issue in the modem.

You may have experienced this yourself on the other side of things when
dialing out manually. You can do your ATDT command - if you are
impatient and a fast typer you might press return immediately after
seeing the "CONNECT" message - to quickly - and the modem drops the
link.

Modifying getty to sleep an additional second prior to the output of the
first login prompt cleared this up totally when it was biting my butt.
Its been awhile though - so this may not be your problem. Just another
thing to check into.
