Using 2-er's with 14,400 modems

We were trying to fire up a pm2-er30 with some old USR 14,400 Sportster
modems as a back-up unit.

When we followed all instructions, and used the recommended modem init
string on the asynch ports, users would just get garbage strings rather
than a greeting string or a request to logon. PAP was unsuccessful.

Sounds like a speed incompatibility...but....any suggestions?

Can a pm2 handle these slower modems on their asynch ports?
