Michael,

There are different scripts/programs out there that can do it for you
automatically. One that comes to mind is pmmon (Port Master Monitor).

This feature is NOT the main feature but it does the job well. It will
automatically reset a modem which is stuck in "username" or "logging in".
You can set the intervals that it checks.
