Actually, SMTP (and I am willing to bet most if not all other Mail
Servers) gives each message a "unique" identifier, for example, the
following was given to a dumb little test message I sent:
<3.0.32.19970720093103.00733734@lightcom.net>. No other message will get
this id. Useful for reference purposes ...
BTW, if say, Livingston's mail server crashes or gremlins redirect mail to
/dev/null, then you won't get a bounced message; hence the need for
auto-ACK. Remember, Murphy is always watching for an opportunity.
