"The computer you dialed disconnected..."

While dialing into my portmasters this morning, I noticed an unusual
problem. I was immediately getting disconnected before I could verify my
username and password. So I brought up a terminal window after dial (in
win95) and I was presented with my typical login prompt (no garbage, etc).

But as soon as I hit a character, it would repeat endlessly. If I tried to
type really fast, I would soon use up all my login attempts and it would
disconnect me for login failures.

Here's screen output. Notice that part of my welcome message appears
(again) at the login prompt:

elcome to BerkshireNet!
Unauthorized use of this system will be prosecuted!

Logging into Portmaster #2

BerkshireNet Login: Welcome to BerkshireNet! <-bad
Password:
Invalid Login
BerkshireNet Login:
BerkshireNet Login:
ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss\
ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssWelcome to BerkshireNet! <-BAD!

So I managed to logon to another portmaster and telnet into this one.
After changing my prompt, I got a long pause and the following output:

pm2e2> save all
Saving global configuration
Saving ports
Couldn't save configuration detail
Saving global configuration
Saving ports
...

Hmmm.. That might have something to do with the fact that I confused
message with prompt and set a multiline login prompt. But I tried the save
again before catching my error and it worked.

So then I went back and fixed my boo-boo (after successfully logging into
it with a messed up (my error) login prompt) and saved, rebooted and it
seems to be ok, now.

Anyone have any ideas?

Also, on another note... We use microcom ISPorte's here. Occasionally they
lose their config and output garbage at the login prompt. Anyone have
problems with that, too?

Thanks
