Dialing to a Win95 "server" from a pm2 (analog modem, ppp) ??

I know, it is backwards!

We have a number of field sites that we have to dialup to do service
on. These are win95 machines.

Right now what we have to do, is ask someone at the remote site to
call us (we provide a nice simple button to push), the win 95 machine
calls us (pm2e) and a ppp link is established. We then connect back
to the win95 machine over the link.

BUT...

We would rather leave the win95 machine in "listen" mode and call it
when we want.

This works if we call from another win95 box. But if we have our pm2e
do the calling, a ppp link is never setup. The connection is never
established. Listening to the modems, it sounds like the connection
is dropped before the modems sync.

If i dial manually (through the portmaster), using something like
'cu'. I never get a connection. I am not asked to login, nothing. It
is not at all like dialing the pm2 which asks for a login, then gives
a bit of an ascii message specifying the ppp parameters then starts
the ppp negotiation.

What gives?

Can I make this work?

Kind regards,
Larry
