Competitive modems? (fwd)

Once upon a time Jacob Suter shaped the electrons to say...
>modems will be public? Like USR, Cardinal, Hayes, etc actually have
>the ability to make the addon modems themselves?

I hope not.

Can you buy Multitech modems for a USR TC? How about Cardinal modems
for an Ascend MAX? Or Hayes modems for a Xylogics RA6300?

No.

1. The code for the modems is DSP specific and PART OF THE COMOS. Other
modem makers would have to use the same DSP and make exactly the same HW.
No advantage.
2. One of the reasons we make this box is to stop giving away revenue to
modem makers. Think about it - a PM2e-20 enambes the sale of *30* modems.
Right now we help other companies - including USR which is a competitor on
some levels (TC vs PMs) - make more money.

Livingston, while different from most, is still a commercial venture. :-)
