What is the syntax for usage of summarize utility?

I have used the lineparser utility to parse some detail file data and piped
it to a file. Can I run summarize on this file? If so, what is the
command line syntax? I tried:

#>summarize parseddetail

All it did was sit there forever and seemed to do nothing. What have I
done wrong?
