data loss with in.pmd

i'm experiencing significant data loss using the following setup and
would sure appreciate any pointers on why this might be happening:

a PM2e, 30 port unit. in.pmd is running on a Sparc 5 running
Solaris 2.5. I also have the newest PM code.

my simple test is to hook up one USR Sportster voice modem to
port S1 and configure the modem for voice receive mode. S1 is configured
as 2-way (as i couldn't get the pseudo-tty stuff to work any other
way), 38400 baud, hw handshake - nothing is host-overridable.

so, when i call the modem and start speaking, more than 1/2 of the voice
packets have missing data (i'm reading on a file descriptor opened
on /dev/ttyr1).

if i take the same modem and plug it into the sun's ttyb using the same port
params, i don't lose bytes.

i've played with baud rates, handshaking, etc, but to no avail.

i've been through the manuals and the mailing list archives but haven't
found anything that helps.

any hints?

thanks.
