Dirk, I to have the same problem.

After sitting down and monitoring a Hayes Accura that was exhibiting the
same fault, it turned out that the Hayes was sending some strang signals
that made the Portmaster think there was an incomming call and therefore
open the line and display the prompt. As the line was not open, this
login message goes to the Modem bit bucket. When the modem does then
answer a call the portmaster does not redisplay the login prompt as it
already thinks the line is open.

A quick and nasty work around is to hit enter twice. Assuming you do not
have pass through enabled, this will redisplay the login prompt.

I think it is a Hayes / Configuration setup. What init strings do we have
lying around?
