PortMaster ISDN Office Router

Product Overview

The new PortMasterTM ISDN Office Router can be used as a dial-up router, a dial-in communications server, or a combination of both. It has all the software features as the larger PortMaster Communications Servers and IRXTM Routers, which all run the same ComOSTM. The PortMaster ISDN Office Router has one Ethernet port (AUI and 10BaseT), one ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) port, and one asynchronous port (115.2 Kbps). The BRI port includes an integrated NT1 (network termination) device and supports two 64 Kbps B channels for data transmission and one 16 Kbps D channel for ISDN signaling.

Key Applications

The PortMaster Office Router is ideal for small LANs needing high speed, dial-on-demand routing to the Internet or to private corporate networks. Each of the two ISDN B channels can be used individually for multiprotocol routing to separate LAN's or they can be combined for 128 Kbps of bandwidth to a single location. The asynchronous port can be used for dial-up access to the LAN for remote users, as a modem back-up to the ISDN line, or for remote management.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Low cost, full-featured router

The ISDN Office Router is the lowest cost, full-featured ISDN router on the market today. Unlike other low cost ISDN bridge/routers on the market, the ISDN Office Router supports simultaneous IP and IPX routing, does not limit the number of users or routes (static or dynamic) that can be added, and offers extensive network layer IP and IPX firewall filtering capabilities.

  • Fully integrated NT1's

By integrating the NT1 device into the ISDN Office Router, eliminates the need for an external device (costing up to $250), cabling, and power supply. This provides for clean and easy installation, less equipment configuration, and fewer points of failure.

  • Support for Multilink PPP (MP) and dynamic bandwidth extensions

For higher bandwidth requirements, the ISDN Office Router supports Multilink PPP (RFC 1717) for combining the BRI port's two ISDN B channels. This feature coupled with the PortMaster's dynamic bandwidth allocation capabilities allows the product to automatically bring-up the second ISDN B channel as bandwidth needs increase. As soon as traffic decreases, the ISDN Office Router disconnects unneeded B channels. This feature allows for optimum throughput while minimizing LAN-to-LAN line costs. It also allows for compatibility with other Multilink PPP ISDN devices.

  • Dial-on-demand routing

When users need access to a remote LAN or the Internet, all router initiation and dialing is completely transparent to the user. A PortMaster ISDN Office Router automatically dials the remote location and brings up one or two (configurable) ISDN B channels as soon as the user request is made. If other users on the LAN need access to the same location, they can send information over the active link. If users need access to a different location, the ISDN Office Router will automatically bring up the second B channel, or if it is in use, an analog V.34 modem link. When ISDN traffic is idle for a user configurable amount of time, the link is automatically disconnected.

  • Support for V.120 asynchronous rate adaption

For trouble free interoperability with remote asynchronous terminal adapters or ISDN modems (like the PowerLink128 ISDN Modem), the ISDN Office Router supports the V.120 rate adaption standard. This feature is automatically enabled and allows the unit to autodetect asynchronous PPP/SLIP/Terminal Server users as well as standard synchronous PPP dial-in users.

  • ISDN Digital Dialtone Diagnostics

The ISDN Office Router contains powerful multi-layered diagnostic capabilities which allow users to easily troubleshoot their ISDN connections. Summary status as well as detailed information is provided for each layer of ISDN connectivity. Users are able to see a valid physical-layer synchronization with the telco switch even before entering ISDN specific information (SPID and switch type). These diagnostics eliminate guesswork between end users and telcos, reduce central support costs, and increase user satisfaction.

  • Reliability and easy management

The PortMaster ISDN Office Router uses Lucent's proven ComOS, the software technology used in all of Lucent's IRX Routers and PortMaster Communication Servers. The ISDN Office Router is fully manageable by Lucent's PMconsole GUI management utility (included) and+ offers comprehensive firewall and user security.

  • Economical routing solution

Using a higher-density PortMaster 2E or 2ER Communications Server equipped with the 5-BRI ISDN Module as the central dial-in routing hub, the ISDN Office Router is ideal for branch offices. With these products, provides a high-performance, cost-effective multi-site ISDN routing solution.
