PortMaster ISDN Base Units
Questions and Answers

Q. What are Lucent's new ISDN products?

A. Lucent offers two new ISDN products: an ISDN base version of the popular PortMasterTM 2E Communications Server and the new PortMaster 2i Communications Server. The ISDN base PortMaster 2E comes standard with 5 BRI (Basic Rate Interface) ISDN ports, one Ethernet port (AUI, BNC, 10Base-T), one 115.2 Kbps asynchronous serial port, and two expansion slots. These slots can be populated with Lucent 5-BRI ISDN expansion modules or 10 port asynchronous modules. The PortMaster 2i is a fixed configuration unit with 5 BRI ISDN ports, one Ethernet port (AUI, BNC, 10Base-T), and one 115.2 Kbps asynchronous serial port.

Q. Are these products available in U and S/T interface versions?

A.Yes. The U interface versions features fully integrated NT1s (network termination devices) for each BRI and are for use in North America. The S/T interface versions connect to external NT1s and are typically for use outside of North America (although they support North American switch standards).

Q. What is the sixth RJ-45 port on the PortMaster 2i and 2E ISDN base unit for?

A.The sixth port is a high-density ten-pin RJ-45 jack (labeled "HD") which can be used to run 5-BRIs (10 B channels) over one cable direct to a punchdown block. includes a 20' high density cable. This HD port is only included on the U interface products.

Q. What is the maximum number of B-channels which can be combined on a PortMaster 2E or PortMaster 2i?

A. Any PortMaster with ISDN interfaces can use Multilink PPP (RFC 1717) or Lucent's own Multi-line Load Balancing to combine any number of available ISDN B-channels on a single chassis. A PortMaster 2i can combine a maximum of 10 B-channels and the PortMaster 2E with two additional ISDN expansion cards can combine up to 30 B-channels into one high-speed WAN link.

Q. Is the T1/E1 WAN port ("R" version) option available for these products?

A. The T1/E1 WAN port is not available on these new ISDN PortMasters. It is still available on the fixed configuration 10-port PortMaster (2R) and on the expandable asynchronous base chassis PortMaster (PM-2ER).

Q.Are these products rackmountable?

A. Yes. Both products come pre-drilled and include the necessary brackets for installation in standard 19" equipment racks.

Q. What can the "CO-DIAG" (console diagnostic) port be used for on the PortMaster 2E and 2i?

A.This port is an asynchronous port that can handle up to 115.2 Kbps of throughput. By connecting an external V.34 modem, this port can provide dial back-up to your ISDN lines and provides the capability for a network administrator to remotely configure and monitor the PortMaster. It can also be used as a traditional dial-in port offering remote access to individuals connecting to LAN resources or to the Internet.

Q. What ComOS version is required to operate these new ISDN products?

A. The new PortMaster 2E ISDN base unit and the PortMaster 2i come pre-loaded with ComOSTM version 3.3.2.

Q. Can the PortMaster 2E ISDN base be ordered preconfigured with expansion boards like the standard PM-2E (PM-2E-20, PM-2E-30)?

A. The ISDN base PortMaster 2E can not be ordered with pre-installed expansion boards from . The ISDN base PortMaster 2E is an individually orderable part. The two expansion slots can be filled with 10-port asynchronous or 5-BRI modules (MOD cards) which are also individually orderable. The MOD cards should be installed by the reseller as a value added service for the end-user.

Q. Is the standard asynchronous base PortMaster 2E with still available?

A. Yes, the standard 10-port asynchronous base PortMaster 2E (PM-2E) will continue to be available. This unit accepts ISDN expansion modules as well.

Q. What are these product's ordering codes and list prices? When are they available?

A. The PortMaster 2E ISDN base option's list price is US$3895. Ordering codes are PM-2E-10I-U and PM-2E-10I-ST. The PortMaster 2i Communications Server list price is US$3495. Ordering codes are PM-2i-U and PM-2i-ST. Products will be available in mid-June.
